Royal Air Maroc to promote inland tourism
Morocco’s flag carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) will order six new planes this month despite the bleak outlook for tourism during the global economic downturn, according to reports.
The spokesperson for RAM has stated that the company has ordered for 2 ATR 42-600s and 4 ATR 72-600s, plus options for 2 additional ATR 72-600. The aircraft will be operated by Royal Air Maroc Express, the new regional subsidiary of the airline, which will be launched in summer 2009.
Commenting on this deal, RAM Chief Executive Driss Benhima, Royal Air Maroc is one of the most profitable airlines in North Africa, has plans to strengthen its Boeing-dominated fleet to 50 jets. In a business conference in Casablanca, Mr. Benhima told that RAM is looking beyond this year’s economic crisis to develop its business and endure the competition from European airlines. He commented: “We are very proud of being the first carrier in the Mediterranean region to introduce the new ATR ‘-600 series’ in the fleet and to be able to offer passengers aircraft featuring the most advanced technologies, both in comfort and performance”.
The carrier is benefiting from the government’s policy to increase tourism from 8 million in 2008 to 10 million visitors by 2010. The government is also encouraging the expansion of air transport, including low-cost flights. RAM draws more than 70 percent of its revenue from European markets.
The airline will also provide new air connectivity to the regions, enabling them to underline their appeal and helping them to promote inland tourism. This is likely to be a positive development for owners of property in these regions as it suggests that demand for rental accommodation will increase.
In related news, Fleewinter.com has stated that the North African country could be a good investment market because it has a growing tourism sector.
