Moroccan port of Essaouira is ideal for a warm getaway

Morocco, with its mix of idyllic beaches, rugged mountains and wide open deserts has become increasingly popular as a tourist destination in recent years. Being one of Morocco’s main fortified coastal towns, Essaouira boasts a strong feeling of its past. Starting with the Phoenicians, it has been a trading post for almost 3000 years. But the town as it now appears is far younger, about 200 years. Essaouira has a nice little collection of sights all of great aesthetical value, according to experts.

Experts from Simpson travel has stated that Essaouira still maintains many of the traditional charms which have attracted tourists through the decades, including the rock stars Jimi Hendrix and Cat Stevens. There is a certain conservative touch to Essaouira, town thrives both on the inside as well as the outside the walls and the inner sections are more compact and claustrophobic.

Meanwhile, travel industry experts say that the destination offers delights such as the Mechouar Restaurant which is the best place for the European style night event at Essaouira. This hotel is situated close to the Medina Bab Skip Sbaa and the souks. The windsurfers skim the waves year round and footballers enjoy the extensive sands in the beach. Essentially, Essaouira is tailor-made for relaxing, rambling, shopping and soaking up the atmosphere of the town’s lovely riad guesthouses.

This comes after Louise Roddon, a travel writer has written in the Telegraph that Essaouira -style sophistication offers some of the best bargains for UK tourists in the current economic climate.
