Advanced telecom project will make Morocco a more attractive investment destination
Morocco’s telecommunications network is one of the most advanced in Africa. The news of impending end of a new undersea broadband fiber optic cable work to France may encourage people to buy property in Morocco, as an advanced telecommunications system could enhance its appeal to foreign companies seeking an offshore base and property investors.
Abdeslam Ahizoune, president of Maroc Telecom has said that the Atlas Offshore cable will span Marseille to Asilah and it affords Morocco with a hi-tech communications infrastructure. He also added that this makes Morocco as a more attractive option to companies seeking an offshore base.
The Oxford Business Group has reported that the line can handle up to 500,000 simultaneous phone calls and data transfers. This would bring it in line with some European markets over the next decade. Morocco is presently rolling out Wi-Max technology with the purpose of offering more internet-based services to local people. Besides, Morocco has launched commercial Internet Protocol Television and 3G mobile services.
Morocco’s telecoms market is expanding at a faster rate than in any other part of the world. Recently, Itissalat Al Maghrib and Nortel declared plans to inaugurate a next-generation broadband network in Rabat and Casablanca.
