Fez or fes, once the capital of Morocco for more than 400 years and the home of the oldest university of the country and the leading cultural and religious centre. Fès is also the guardian of Arabic-Moorish art. Fez is the cultural and spiritual centre of Morocco. It was founded in 790 BC by Moulay Idriss II. The main attraction in this ancient city is the medieval Medina, the old part of the city, which has been continuously inhabited since the 10th century and still remains intact. The Medersa el-Attarine or Attrainr Madrase is an architectural beauty and was created in 1325. The most visited section of the Medersa el-Attraine is the center courtyard. The striking feature of souks in fez is their pattern. Traditionally, the Mosque was at the centre of the souk. Bab Er Rsif : is the central gate, opening onto the square in front of the Bab Er Rsif mosque
Bab el-Ftouh : is the southeast gate for the cemeteries
Bab Guissa : the north gate, lies on the ruined Merenid tombs on a hilltop which lies at the eastern end of the plain of Saiss, bordered by the foothills of the Atlas Mountains,we can clearly view the entire city of sez

The Jamai Palace is a marvel of architecture and is a must see for tourists. It is built in the the hispano-mauresque style. The Jamaï palace was renovated and transformed into a luxurious hotel in the thirties.
